Gladys Ann Grogan MacDonald, 102, passed away peacefully Friday, May 1, at Mountain View Care Center. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Neil W. MacDonald, who died in 1998.
Born April 3, 1918, in Minooka, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Anna Cusick Grogan. She and Neil raised their family in West Scranton and were members of St. Patrick's Parish, where they were active and dedicated volunteers.
A graduate of Minooka High School, she often sang the school's alma mater for family and friends.
Affectionately known as "Glady," "Grandma Mac" and "Olive Oil," she was a loving, caring and welcoming person. She had a heart of gold and had a way of making everyone feel special. Glady cherished her faith and family and found joy in the smallest things in life, especially candy, cookies, lemon lush and iced tea. She was a great storyteller and an avid New York Yankees fan. Glady was proud of her Irish heritage and was thrilled to have visited Ireland twice with Neil. She was an inspiration to her family and all who knew her. "To know her was to love her." She was born during the Pandemic of 1918 and passed during the Pandemic of 2020.
She is survived by her five loving children, Jeanne and husband, Edward Wirth, Macungie, Pa.; Neil and wife, Norie, Scranton; Ronald and wife, Joan, Scranton; Michael and wife, Patricia, Tioga, Pa.; and William and wife, Lori, Scranton; 13 adoring grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews who she loved dearly.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Leo, Peter, Frank and Patrick Grogan; and four sisters, Celestine Heston, Mary Ruane, Mildred Cerep Sparacino and Dorothy Corbett; a granddaughter, Alison B. MacDonald; and a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Grudis MacDonald.
The family would like to acknowledge and extend heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff and aides at Mountain View Care Center who provided Gladys with years of loving care and kindness.
A private funeral was held from Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton, PA 18505, followed by entombment at Cathedral Cemetery with a graveside service celebrated by the Rev. Richard Fox. A memorial Mass will be held at a time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Parish or its food pantry, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton, PA 18504.
